I'm not sure why he's mean, but it just adds to the excitement of the show. I mean, it wouldn't be fun with all "nice" judges, would it?
He's not mean, he's just frank, blunt, straight-up. He usually is right about a lot of the people.

He's not mean, just honest. People who think he is mean obviously have no musical experience whatsoever. He NEVER lies, and when he says' you are bad, you are bad. Personally he is my favorite judge because he, unlike Paula and Randy, actually give's constructive criticism (if your not ridiculously horrible) and doesn't move around the point.
