The movie shows snapshots of his whole life, from his a little boy getting slapped on the ear, through highschool and the start of college, getting married, having kids, and finally having his mid-life christmas time crisis.

When he starts having his troubles in the "present" of the movie, his oldest child, the boy (Tommy?), looks to be about 12, so I think he is in his thirties, somewhere around 38.
