The Scientologists are soooo protective of their "public relations machine" (which is all that Cruise is to the Scientologists) that they have infiltrated his entire life and his staff. The idiosyncratic ideas they feed him are manifesting themselves in such bizarre behavior as the couch jumping episode... but there are others: as witness his firing and other people who used to like him but now don't. His popularity is definitely waning, and yes, it has everything to do with Scientology.
