Interesting question. The early Christians consisted of Gnostics as well as the early Roman Western Church. Gnostics considered the earth to be evil and that there were shards of a higher holy nature distributed throughout the universe. Man could gain knowledge, mystical knowledge, through this idea. I do think that that which is not of God is not a good thing, though not necessarily devilish in nature. Human nature is dualistic and yet, man was created in God's image and is holy, but we worship ourselves and the physical pleasures of Earth instead of God. People lose focus. There is wisdom in those old Gnostic texts were considering.
