How did Bono, lead singer of U2 get involved/interested in helping with AIDS and!

Answers: Please give a resource from the internet or book when answering:).

In 1998, a guy named Marc Marot (from Island Records) contacted him to discuss an organization called Jubilee 2000, which was aiming to get Third World debt forgiven by the turn of the century. That led to meeting Jamie Drummond, who was part of Jubilee 2000, and convinced Bono that this was something to be involved in.

Jubilee 2000 went away after the turn of the century, and the organization renamed itself Drop the Debt. There was a sister organization created called Make Poverty History, which was focused on more than just debt relief.

Bono, Drummond, and others (Bobby Shriver, for one) created DATA (Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa), which became sort of the policy/lobbying organization, overseeing the work and communication with world governments. Then in 2004, Bono created the ONE Campaign to be the grassroots, man-on-the-street advocacy group.

(Bono's background actually goes further back, to 1985, when U2 played at the Live Aid concert for famine relief and then he and his wife quietly went to Ethiopia and spent a month working in a camp there.)

Hope this helps.
