Why do we idolize idiots?!

Question: Cases in point:
1. Dale Earnhardt scoffed at and ridiculed the use of the "Hans device", a head and neck restraint, that WOULD have prevented his death, due to brain stem seperation in a car crash. Idiot.
2. Indian Larry was a very experienced motorcycle rider who lost his life due to brain injuries caused during a motorcycle accident. He was standing on the saddle of a powerful machine, while traveling down the road, with his hands out at his sides. He wasn't wearing a helmet. Look Ma, no hands, no helmet, no brains. Idiot.
And while we're on the topic of idiots dying doing what they loved, let's not forget:
3. Elvis Presley. Loved his drugs and died of a self inflicted overdose. Idiot.
I was just wondering why any sane person would idolize such idiocy.

come on you cant compare the great elvis to those other idiots elvis gave a lot to a lot of people and we dont know what drove him to drugs and i bet your like me and millions of others who love robbie williams and other people who also have taken or dabbled with drugs..they just havent over dosed yet and elvis was a sad lonely man maybe drugs gave him something that all his money never could

I dont but wonder why they do.

Why do we idolise at all?

Because I'm tired of idolizing brilliants!!!

Perhaps without realizing it, you have half answered your own question! Give yourself 5 points... in case you missed it; they idolize them because they are not sane and these people represent the 'glamour' that they wish they had in their own lives. Sad really.

Life is more intersting when you break the rules or live a little wild. Yes, sometimes you pay the price but at least you can live without fear and those too scared can garner some small level of satisfaction by scoffing at the "idiocy" of those not afraid. Chicken!

I don't have any idols...
but look idiots like idiots!

this is really good question though... *star!*

I don't know but Americans even make idiots President.

i admire Elvis` talent, as for his idiosy i don`t idolize it . he is just human like me, like you.

i don`t believe you do everything right.

I idolize no one... lots of ppl are just sheep I guess. they don't think of what they are looking up to, and do it just because others are doing it

Are you saying you idolize these people? I never knew anyone who idolized any of these people lol though it would be kinda funny seeing someone who idolizes Elvis! Ha ha always lifting his upper lip and dancing like a fool! kinda makes me laugh thinking about it. I never heard of Indian Larry, What was he famous for? Hay ya know what?! As long as you enjoyed whatever you were doing when you died! and in this case all of these men probably died doing the exact thing they love...especially mr. Elvis lol He must of been trippen like F-word (with a ing at the end) Crazy! lol you guys like my new way of swearing on yahoo?!

I don't. I admire someone who is far from all of that. And I'm proud to be a fan. His name: Daniel Radcliffe.

not everyone idolizes celebrities. i know i dont.

Isn't it interesting how people claim they aren't interested in celebrities, but still show up here in this section to answer questions about them all the time?

but I digress..

You want to know why "we" idolize idiots?

Well, define "idiot."

There was once a guy from a small town who lived to be 33 years old, he "dissed" his parents at age 12, he didn't have a "proper" upwardly mobile job, he never got married and had kids, he hung out with a somewhat shady crowd including a woman believed to be a common prostitute. He constantly challengd and po'd the PTB and allowed himself to be set up by a friend and killed by those same people in power.

Oh did I happened to mention he once walked on water, and performed miracles and then rose from the dead on the 3d day of his death? and many people "idolize" him to this very day? Go ahead and call Jesus Christ an "idiot"...and see how far you get with MILLIONS of Christians around the world!

Did you know there are people around the world and in your town who do things some people would consider very "idiotic?" Things like confront criminals, run into burning buildings, hang around people with contagious diseases, and actually go to different places around the world and let folks shoot at them? Are you going to now call law enforcement, firefighters, doctors, nurses and military personnel idiots because they take risks all the time? and yes, there are people who do "idolize" such people...

My point? People "idolize" or rather respect, admire and emulate people for a variety of reasons...and it's really none of your business or place to judge them for it. One person's "idiot" is another's genius..or hero. That "idiot" may have inspire someone else to stay away from drugs, or to wear that safety belt or bike helmet.

So be careful who you slam...

There is good and bad in everyone...in other words, no human being is perfect. The humans you mention did make some bad choices, but they also were people of great talent and ability. They were also people who realized that life is meant to be LIVED on the playing field, not scorned at from the sidelines.

Much of your disdain probably stems from jealousy that these folks had talent and fame and you can't do nothing but sit on your butt and look your nose down on others...and play the "sour grapes" game.

Are you trying to tell us you've never made a "bad" choice or a mistake or are completely flawless? Boy, you must be an incredibly BORING person, not to mention judgmental and self-righteous.
