When a celebrity says something unpopular (Don Imus, Dog Bounty Hunter, etc) and!

Question: Does it make you think better of them or less? I lose respect personally when people dont defend what they think.

Yeah I think they're full of **** and that their publicist is behind it crapping themselves telling them "Like OMG your career is totally ruined unless you go and adopt 10 african children". I mean obviously some of this stuff comes out in the heat of passion and its the truth....so if they are racist then they are racist. Their apologies definitely don't make me think any better of them....just makes me think they are swine.

I don't think about celebrities at all, so it make no difference to me one way or the other. Most of them are desperate to remain in the public eye and often spew out ridiculous comments to the media. If they then issue an apology, what happens? They get more free publicity. It all boils down to Show Biz which many find entertaining, but not I.

I would think better of them if they were apologizing of their own volition, not just because they got "caught" in public. I.e., the individual themselves realizes what they just said, and immediately says, "that's not right and I'm sorry I should never say that."

Secondly, a person is free to THINK whatever they like, but the line is crossed when something hurtful is said in public (hurtful and racist, not just "unpopular"). They should be held accountable. I agree in part that a person should stand behind their words; obviously they were thinking the words before speaking them. Their thinking hasn't changed, just their behavior because they were publicly chastized.

It wouldn't matter to me, I've never liked either one of them, so they could recite the Gettyburg Address or count up to 100 and back in 5 languages and I STILL wouldn't like them!

Besides, their statements weren't merely "unpopular" they were rude, hurtful, sexist and racist. ... not to mention indefensible and inexcusable!

The apology makes me think less of them. They showed their true colors when they made that statement. An apology is only made because they got caught or they let things go to far. But they acted in that way and just because they give an apology does not mean they instantly change their way of thinking. Dog said, he will never use that word again. But what about all the times he used it and it wasn't publicized, he never realized he should stop that even when people had mentioned it to him before. For the most part they are trying to just save their careers. It looks better when they apologize and if they apologize they may be able to still make money.

I believe that if you say it, you should own it. Apologies are merely a way of diverting guilt. I have more respect for someone that stands their ground, right or wrong, than for someone that uses "I'm Sorry" as a shield and wimps out.
