Yep, 24 hours in jail and 3 years probation.

Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson was sentenced Monday to three years probation for possession of a narcotic drug, cocaine, and three years probation for driving while under the influence.

He also was ordered to serve one day in jail for the DUI. Tyson, 41, will serve that day in jail Tuesday. He is to report to a Maricopa County Jail in downtown Phoenix at 10 a.m.

The sentence was handed down Monday in Mesa by Maricopa Superior Court Judge Helene Abrams. Tyson had faced up to 3.75 years in prison for the possession conviction and six months in jail for the DUI.

"I'm most impressed you got help almost immediately upon your arrest," Abrams told Tyson. "You also assisted others by becoming a role model."

She warned Tyson, however, that if he violates the terms of the probation, he still faces the prison time.

Defense attorney David Chesnoff thanked Judge Abrams for being "open minded."

"I think she was giving fair treatment for a person who has proved himself," Chesnoff said. "Anyone who would second-guess her after Mike's peformance would be mistaken."

Chesnoff told the court that Tyson had checked himself into the Wonderland drug rehabiltion center in Southern California immediately after his arrest by police.

Tyson was arrested Dec. 29, 2006, after a traffic stop after he had spent the evening at Scottsdale's Pussycat Lounge.

A police officer said he saw Tyson wipe a white substance off the dashboard of the car and that Tyson's speech was slurred. Authorities said they found drugs in Tyson's pocket and car.

During his treament, Tyson has attended Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings and spoken to inmates at the Los Angeles County Jail, Chesnoff said, adding that the ex-boxer plans to help disadvantaged youth in Phoenix.

"He did it because it's part of his recovery and he wants to help others," Chesnoff said. "He's gone to where there's people who need him."

Chesnoff said in court that Tyson has passed 29 drug tests since his arrest and is serious about cleaning up his life.

Tyson "knows recovery will be a long road," Chesnoff said. "It's tough but he's got a lot of support."

Prosecutors had asked Abrams to send Tyson to prison for one year.

Shane Krauser, a deputy county district attorney, said Tyson has a long arrest history including for such offenses as rape, assault and a 2004 brawl in a New York City hotel.

"Mr. Tyson is a repeat offender," Krauser said. "His criminal history is substantial because it contains mostly violent offenses."

The prosecutor said Tyson never sought help until he was arrested and that he should be treated like any other defendant and not receive any preferential treatment because he had so many resources at this disposal.

"If the court doesn't impose punitive sanctions, we're sending the wrong message here," Krauser said.
