I know that when they started out in 1981 with the video "Video killed the Radio Star" that they intended to play music, so they named their station Music TeleVision hence MTV.

Since then they have opted to change their programing to "Reality" TV (scripted..poorly).

They still show music videos for about 2 hours a day mostly early mornings when people aren't even watching. They are also a part of the music community hosting awards shows and breaking new artists.

I know it's hard to believe to some people that they actually were a music program but once a long long time ago they were.

It stands for music.
