There is plenty of proof in that his brother, actor Luke Wilson, went to Owen's house and found him after he had slashed his wrists. By the urgency of Luke's rescue and the transport of Owen to the hospital, it was an apparent suicide attempt. Although it has been rumored that owen did this due to Kate Hudson, I highly doubt it. Owen is a known womanizer and drug user who has tossed women aside for years. Perhaps his ego was a bit bruised after Kate dumped him and started seeing another man. I'm sure that Owen has bigger issues in his life than Kate Hudson. Owen's major problem is drugs and a drug addled lifestyle. Often, drug use and abuse can make people feel hopeless and helpless. It could be that he has depression also. I never heard that Owen's mother abandoned him, so I have nothing to say about that. I do believe that most peoples' issues are buried in childhood traumas.
