Where did the band name duran duran come from?!

Question: how did the band members come up with that name?

Answers: how did the band members come up with that name?

One of the villains of the 1968 cult film Barbarella is Dr. Durand Durand, inventor of the "Orgasmatron".

When the band was searching for a name, they had recently seen the film on television, and were sometimes playing at a club called Barbarella's in Birmingham. They wanted a name that didn't mean anything on its own, but that had an elegant and unusual sound. It's said that John Taylor proposed it, and Nick Rhodes agreed.

The band has enjoyed slipping references to the film into their work. They got Milo O'Shea, the actor who played Durand Durand, to appear in their 1984 concert film "Arena"; used clips from the film in the video for "Wild Boys", and audio samples from it in the remix single "Burning the Ground"; and released a song named "Electric Barbarella" in 1997 -- this was actually the first single ever sold over the internet by a record company, as a 99-cent download!
