He claimed it was due to vitiligo, a disease that causes lighter patched of skin to appear, usually on African-Americans. However, I've known people who had vitiligo and it's rarely all-encompassing. I don't doubt that he truly does have the disease, but, as many speculate, I believe he bleached his skin to make it all one uniform color.

but he has a severe case of vitiligo where almost his entire body was affected,so he now has to use lighter makeup to even out his complexion.....

Ok I'll start at the beginning and hopefully this clears everything up a little more than just "he has a skin disease."
First of all, Michael Jackson is a vegetarian. Now, eating a lot of vegetables and fruits is like a natural skin bleaching agent (meaning that your skin will appear lighter) Which answers the question that a lot of people have about his skin becoming lighter from The Jackson 5, to Thriller, and Bad eras. However, around the time of Thriller, Michael was diagnosed with Vitiligo and Lupus. Vitiligo is the reason why his skin became so significantly different colored because what it does is create patches on the skin with out pigment. As the disease progresses these patches grow and more of the suffers skin becomes pastey white. Now, Michael uses makeup to conceal these patches, but there are several pictures on line that reveal these patches as well and give 100% truth to him having this disease.
