Are there ways that people can protest the continual coverage of vacuous, idiotic celebrities? Please don't tell me to ignore them because they are always put in my face in spite of my best efforts to ignore them. Thank you.

I hope so! I'm with you, they (networks) think we are interested, but really we aren't! They are too busy competing with each other to pay attention to what real people really want.
Perhaps we should start a grassroots campaign of some sort. Writing letters or something. I'll think on it, between the 1,000 things I have to do. I hope you get more answers, I'll be checking back.
