I know that this a joke made popular by the Dave Chappelle. I know he said it at the awards but why did he say it?? Something about a woman not knowing who he was?

From a awards show. A lady didnt know who he was and he got pissed off so when it went out the the stage he said "I'm Rick James *****" directing it towards the "*****" that didnt know who he was.
