Is Peter Pan Racist?!

Question:

Is Peter Pan Racist?

Has anyone seen the recently re-released Disney movie Peter Pan? Did anyone else find it appauling? I'm no expert but I believe Native Americans prefer not to be called "red man" or "injun."

How can Disney be getting away with this?

Answers:

For one, the movie was made more than 50 years ago. Disney made no changes to the movie other than probably improving the sound and picture quality and adding some special effects. The use of certain words in the movie may not be racism on Disney's part, but something to show common sentiment or attitudes of the time.

Also, to be honest, a lot of perceived racist or insensitivity towards Native Americans goes unchanged. There has been much debate and concern over the use of Native American mascots in sports. The term redskins (as in Washington Redskins) was an actual derogatory term used against Native Americans long ago. Many people have also objected to the noble, smiling Native American logo used by the Cleveland Indians. There have been many people, both Native American and others, to speak out against such things, but little has been done.

Finally, racism is largely subjective, especially when it's in forms that are more subtle. You may view the use of these terms as an abomination, but others may not. Those in the best position to object may not see things the same way.
